Foster Responsible Digital Citizenship to Promote Freedom of Expression project is a grand initiative to support the young generation of Bangladesh

Foster Responsible Digital Citizenship to Promote Freedom of Expression project is a grand initiative to support the young generation of Bangladesh so that they can become responsible citizens through mass awareness on digital citizenship and through the practice of freedom of expression.

The project is funded by the European Union and is being implemented by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF Bangladesh) and Dnet. The three-year initiative started in February 2020, which is destined to continue till January 2023.

The project will help the youths of Bangladesh to engage in a culture of positive and safe communication in the digital world. It will support them in becoming responsible citizens to express their views independently and safely through digital channels. To help support this initiative, other educational stakeholders of the society including teachers, guardians, policymakers, media representatives and officials of government and non-government organizations will also be included.

Building Capacity:

  • Direct learning sessions with 1000 university students, on digital citizenship education and freedom of expression, at five universities in Dhaka and Rajshahi. This group of 1000 students will then conduct peer learning sessions on digital citizenship and freedom of expression with 4,000 more students.
  • An e-learning portal will provide online course opportunities on digital citizenship that will focus on freedom of expression, digital security laws, and online etiquettes. This website will provide helpful content for teachers and guardians so that they can provide useful suggestions to their students/children on becoming responsible citizens.

Raising Awareness:

  • Workshops with 100 teachers from five universities in Dhaka and Rajshahi to ensure their participation in supporting the students.
  • Awareness-raising workshops with the active participation from 60 media representatives to enable them to promote digital citizenship and freedom of expression through their work.
  • Dissemination of awareness messages among at least 50,000 stakeholders across the country through extensive social media and traditional campaigns.

Advocating for free expression:

  • Advocacy meetings with representatives from the civil society, policymakers, media representatives, and officials of government and non-government organizations. The aim is to address some of the existing barriers to free expression and propose a way to overcome those barriers.
