Aponjon Launches Two New Health Information Mobile Phone Apps

Aponjon, an innovative health information service utilizing mobile phones to improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes, celebrated the launching of two of its new services through a launching ceremony held on April 7th at the Spectra Convention Center, Gulshan, Dhaka. Aponjon delivers behavior change messages to pregnant women, new mothers, and their caretakers using mobile phone technology. The service is funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID).  It sends messages based on the specific details of the subscriber, including week of pregnancy or age of the child, that are customized to appeal to urban and rural clients regardless of their ability to read.

Honorable State Minister, ICT (TBC), Mr. Zunaid Ahmed Palak, graced the event as the chief guest. Ambassador of United States to Bangladesh, H.E. Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat, joined as the special guest. Guests of honor included Prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad, Director, MIS - Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and Dr. Ishtiaq Mannan, Director, Health Nutrition and HIV/AIDS, Save the Children.

The new services of Aponjon launched in the event are ‘Aponjon Shogorva’, and ‘Aponjon Koishor’. These are mobile apps which have been segmented based on the age and need of the target audience. ‘Aponjon Shogorva’ is an app to help expecting mothers to get week by week information on development and conditions of her and the growing child inside her womb.

Lastly, ‘Aponjon Koishor’ is also a mobile application for the adolescent boys and girls and their parents who have access to smartphones, aimed to educate the youth on the physical and psychological changes they go through during adolescence and raise their awareness about the adolescent health issues.

The launching of ‘Aponjon Shogorva’, and ‘Aponjon Koishor’ is a milestone to take the communities one step closer to improved health solutions.
