| Right to Know about Free Medicine |

Access to quality health care is a big issue in Bangladesh. The government has a vast network of health care service for the marginalized communities. However, the existing system can not meet their demand due to mismanagement, transparency and corruption. One of the major issues in the existing health care system is access to free medicine.
The research conducted jointly by D.Net and Panos London titled “Mobile for MDGs: Understanding the Needs and Application of Mobile Telecommunications-based Solutions towards Meeting MDG Goals on Maternal & Child Health in Bangladesh” shows that overwhelming majority of the women (92.47%), who visited doctors and advised by a doctor, had to buy medicine from outside of the hospital/ clinic. In majority of these cases (77.91%) they were advised to buy from outside as the prescribed medicine was ‘not for free distribution’. Another reason for buying from outside was the women were told that the ‘stock of free medicine was out’ (6.98%). Other reason for buying medicine outside hospital/ clinic was the women were not advised from where to buy the medicine prescribed and they opted for buying from outside (15.12%). They have also no idea about which medicine are meant for free and which are not. more |
